Brief facts
Indonesia is an archipelago state and the location is in South East Asia. The word archipelago simply means a group of islands/many islands. The main islands of Indonesia are Java, Sumatra and Sulawesi. Indonesia shares the island of Borneo with two countries, they are Malaysia and Brunei; which is also commonly known as Kalimantan. Indonesia also shares the island of New Guninea with Papua New Guinea, occupying the western part of the island which is known as Papua. The fact is that Indonesia is an archipelago consisting of more than 17,000 islands. The country strategic sea lanes consists of the Indian Ocean on the west, the Pacific Ocean is on the north; and also the South China sea and the Celebes sea.
Indonesia has a population of about 240 million. The majority of its people are Muslims. In fact it is also the country with the world’s largest population of Muslims. Other minority religions that are practice are – Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism and others. The ethnic groups in Indonesia consists of the Javanese, Sudanese, Madurese, Chinese, Coastal Malays and others. There are many different dialects and languages that are spoken in Indonesia. However the official language of this country is Bahasa Indonesia. It is an important language that is symbolic and is also the language that unify the people of Indonesia together.
Most of the people in Indonesia live in the cities and urban areas. The major cities in Indonesia are – Jakarta, Bandung, Surabaya, Medan and Palembang. Jakarta is the capital of Indonesia. It is a city that is grossly congested and crowded, with a population of about 10 million. It is the place where the President of Indonesia and the central government reside. International air links to Jakarta is through the Sukarno – Hatta International Airport, which is located in Cengkareng.
